There has been much discussion in the library regarding “Diary of a Wimpy Kid.” Due to the reading level and content, these books are on hand for our upper grades. According to the official wimpykid.com website, the books are marketed for students in grades 3-7. The author himself has stated that he originally wrote the books for adults, as a nostalgic look back at the middle school years of childhood.
For these reasons, I generally discourage first and second graders from checking them out. “My Weird School” and “Flat Stanley” are similar series which are written for this specific age group. These are available in our library, and will be recommended for students as a replacement until they reach third grade.
However, I understand that several of our younger students have older siblings or parents who read the books with them, or who are comfortable with their student’s ability to read them independently and process the content.
If this is the case for your family, please let me know via email.
If I don’t hear from you, I will hold to my policy of reserving these books for students in third, fourth, and fifth grades. Feel free to contact me any time with questions or concerns regarding your child’s library experience.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Sunderland, SVCCS Librarian
